Andrew K. Rose
B.T. Rocca Professor Teaching the core class in Global Economic Environment to a group of executives, some of whom fly in from Shanghai or Brazil, keeps Professor Andrew K. Rose on his toes—which he enjoys. “In my Berkeley-Columbia EMBA classes I know that my comments will be scrutinized by people who have real-life experience in the economies I’m talking about,” he said. “It’s a very satisfying challenge to know that what I say will be corrected or confirmed by the people in the classroom.” Rose also knows that his students are an extremely intelligent, motivated and cohesive group. This pushes him to work hard and to make sure that every session really counts. He also knows that the students make the most of their time together go out and make the most of being in New York City. “It’s great to see them come together as a tight-knit group,” he observed. Currency unions are one of Rose’s research interests, including examination of the concepts that could lead to the further integration or disintegration of the Euro zone. Recent events in Europe “raise the level of drama in the classroom and offer a fascinating opportunity to look at the very issues being debated in parliaments and economic councils,” he said. “My research deals with real issues that business leaders face in day-to-day life. I try to teach the subject in just that practical way. Real data and real situations come up frequently in every lecture. I want to make sure the students walk out of the classroom understanding something new.”
